Special Permission for Residence

According to the Immigration Bureau, there are 220,000 illegal aliens (overstays) throughout Japan now.
There is a significant decline in numbers comparing to the 600,000 a few years back.

The possible reasons being:

  1. Other countries such as the United States of America became more popular as a place to work.
  2. The penalty is reduced from five years to one year if you turn yourself in to the authority.
  3. There is a new permit called Special Permit for Residence.

Almost anyone is eligible to apply for Special Permission for Residence, but you must meet various requirements in order to obtain it.
